The Tigers ready themselves for a 7-game tournament in Savannah GA on the weekend of March 6, 7 and 8 with a current record of 13-7.

Day One,  Gulf Coast Beach Classic

With a promising start at the Gulf Coast Beach Classic, Tiger softball ran away from Hillsborough Community College, banging out 15 hits and scoring 13 runs in the 13-2 win behind the pitching of Kendall Bruning.  Brittany Cooley cracked a 2-run homer in the fourth and Whitney Galloway hit a solo shot in the fifth.

Laura Curtis singled home two in the sixth while Kaela Jackson led off the seventh inning with a homerun to left.  The Tigers finished scoring with a Suzanne Neubert 2-run double.  Jessica Chaney finished the game with two innings in relief of Bruning.

Chattanooga State ran into two buzz saws in the next games, losing 11-4 to Chipola and 10-4 vs. Gulf Coast.  The Tigers hit the ball all over the park in the Chipola game, tallying 14 hits, but inconsistent pitching and untimely defense were too much to overcome.

Gulf Coast exacted revenge against the Tigers avenging a 1-4 , 2009 loss to the Tigers by reversing the score one year later.  Once again pitching was not up to par and a 10-hit attack was not enough to withstand a more aggressive Gulf Coast team.

At the end of a disappointing day, Coach Randolph challenged her team to play "Tiger Softball" the rest of the year and to start with day two of the tournament.

Timely Hits Give Tigers Shutout

With two outs in the 3rd inning Chattanooga State (10-4) parlayed a Tabitha McNew fielders choice, an Alex Buffington single to center and consecutive walks to Laura Curtis and Kendall Bruning to plate the first run of the game in an eventual 3-0 win vs. St. Petersburg.

Adrienne Lamberson took the win pitching 4 innings while Kendall Bruning earned the save with 3 innings of shutout relief.  St Pete loaded the bases in the 5th inning but Bruning stranded the runners with a strikeout and inducing an inning ending line out to Curtis in right field.

Curtis doubled home McNew who had singled to start the top of the seventh and Bruning singled to center driving home Curtis for her second rbi of the game, giving the Tigers all the insurance they needed. In the bottom of the 7th, Bruning k'd the first two St Pete batters and Kaela Jackson recorded the last out of the game with a catch in left field.

Nine LOB Equals Loss

Leaving the bases loaded in the 1st and leaving nine on base for the entire game translated into a 3-0 loss vs. Wallace Hanceville.  Haley Workman went the distance for Chattanooga State (9-4) and only gave up two hits while striking out eight.

With five walks and four hits the Tigers had rallies in all but the 5th inning but were never able to get the key hit.  Wallace scored 3 runs in the 5th for the final score.

Tigers Beat Lakeland With Tiebreaker

Chattanooga State (9-3) started their Panama City visit with a 3-2 win over Lakeland Community College scoring the winning run in the top of the 8th. Pitchers Kendall Bruning and Haley Workman combined for 12 strikeouts with Workman earning the win.

With one out in the second Kaela Jackson started the Tiger scoring with a solo homerun to center field.  Leah Kelley followed with a double to left and scored on a series of errors by Lakeland.  Lakeland scored two in the
6th to tie the score, setting up the international tie breaker score in the 8th.

McNew was placed on second in the 8th and after one out stole second and came home to score on a Laura Curtis single to center giving the Tigers a 3-2 lead.  In the bottom of the 8th Lakeland left their place runner
stranded at second with a pop out bunt to first, a fly out to left and a groundout to third.

2009-2010 Chattanooga State Softball

Chattanooga State softball has become synonymous with quality, excellence and class. Entering her ninth year as head coach, Beth Keylon-Randolph has molded a program that sets the standard both on the field and in the classroom.

Chattanooga State consistently produces NJCAA All Americans along with yearly Region 7 athletic recognition. Academically, Tiger softball continues to be recognized both individually and as a team.

2009-2010 promises to be another exciting year for Tiger softball. Striving to match a 2009 #1 national ranking, Keylon-Randolph looks to once again make a run at the region and national championships. Fifteen out of the last sixteen years Chattanooga State has won the region championship and under Keylon-Randolph finished as high as 3rd at the national tournament.

With a 2010 pre-season national ranking of 7th, pitching will no doubt be a staple of Tiger softball. NJCAA All-American Haley Workman returns along with sophomore Kendall Bruning. Both are highly sought after D-1 recruits. Adrienne Lamberson adds to the pitching mix with a repertoire of pitches that promises to baffle opponents. Whitney Galloway, Leah Kelley, Tabitha McNew, Kaela Jackson and Lauren Stoker form a sophomore nucleus that exhibits the ability and passion necessary to be a Chattanooga State Tiger.

Local standout Laura Curtis anchors the infield at shortstop while newcomers, Kelsey Coombs, Suzanne Neubert, Alex Buffington, Hayley Adkins and Jessica Chaney assuredly will play major roles in the Tigers success.

With year in and year out success, Chattanooga State softball provides opportunity for young ladies to grow and mature in an educational and athletic environment. Motivated by College President, Dr. Jim Catanzaro, Tiger softball is sought out by many of the best student athletes in the country as a place that can be trusted to provide the very best athletic and academic foundation for achievement.

More Than Just the Blue / Orange Game

posted November 8, 2009

Twenty 10’ Orange Tiger Paw flags donned the outfield fence line.  One Tiger team was dressed in blue, the other in orange.  As the 1 o’clock start time arrived on Saturday, November 7, at Tiger Softball Field, the expectation was high.  And it wasn’t about who was going to win the game.  For that matteBlue Orange Gamer the 11-3 score was almost irrelevant.  But rather it was about who was going to be there.  Coach Randolph had decided after last year’s game it was time to start an alumni organization and that the best way to kick off the idea was to have an alumni game on Blue / Orange day.

Former Tiger softball player Rebecca Potts and her committee worked with Keylon-Randolph to formulate the plan and to assure that the day would be a success.  As the Blue / Orange game concluded with the Keylon-Randolph Chattanooga State Alumniled Blue team spanking the Coach Jaecks led Orange team, 60 former Tiger softball players started to roll onto their old stomping ground.

Coach Randolph summoned all the alumni to the middle of the field, welcomed the players and paid tribute to the tradition that they were all a part of…the alumni were briefed about future plans for the field.  The alumni game will be a yearly tradition, a wall of fame will be erected by the spring to feature special players, money will be raised for orange chair back stadium seats and relationships among past and current players will be nurtured.
Best Days of My Life
The 5 inning alumni game featured many spectacular plays and no doubt contributed to a week of soreness each player would feel, but more then that it was a stepping stone and a foundation being built to honor perhaps one of the most storied programs in the country…CHATTANOOGA STATE SOFTBALL.

Coach Randolph who sponsored shirts for the alumni players and organized food for everyone smiled when she heard one of the former Tiger players exclaim, “ that says it all.”  And what was that?  The slogan on the back of
every alumni shirt said… “The Best Years of My Life.”   Indeed that is the legacy of Chattanooga State softball.

UTK Games Are Stepping Stone for Lady Tigers

posted October 19, 2009

Playing at the Lady Vol's stadium on October 17 and 18, the Tiger softball bats were hot on two blustery cold days, igniting a 4-1 win vs. Lee University, besting Milligan College 5-1, beating Volunteer State 15-1 and finally losing to UTK 10-1.

Sophomore Kendall  Bruning started the weekend by pitching a complete game victory vs. Lee University.  Freshman sensation Alex Buffington, sophomore Katie Blevins and Bruning each drove in runs in the 6th inning to give the Tigers the final 4-1 lead, after Lee had tied the game in their half of the 6th.  Chattanooga State started the scoring in the 1st inning as Buffington scored one of her two runs of the game, scoring on a Laura Curtis double down the left field line.

With a hint of snow in the air Adrienne Lamberson brought her assorted tricks to the mound at the 8 p.m., 38 degree weather start of the Milligan game.  Milligan pushed across a run in the 1st inning only to see Lamberson settle in and give up only three hits the rest of the way.

The Tigers marked the scoreboard in the 4th inning when third baseman Brittany Cooley singled home Blevins who had started the rally with a two out double.  Leah Kelley joined Cooley on base with a single to left setting the stage for some Kaela Jackson dramatics.  Brought in to pinch hit by Head Coach Beth Keylon-Randolph, Jackson drove a two ball two strike pitch some 290 feet hitting the top of the scoreboard, launching Tiger softball to the 5-1 victory.  Buffington  finished off the scoring in the 5th with a sacrifice fly driving home Tabitha McNew who had tripled to start the inning.

Day two featured an opening game with unlikely conference foe, Volunteer State.  Once again Lamberson used pinpoint control to stifle Vol's bats while her teammates banged out 18 hits in 5 innings in the 15-1 win.  The Tigers unloaded for 5 runs in the 1st, 4 runs in the 2nd and 6 runs in the 3rd.

McNew led off the game with a double and was promptly singled home by Buffington,  Curtis singled Buffington to second who then scored on a 1st pitch line drive to left by Blevins.  Cooley eventually singled home Curtis and Blevins for a 4-0 lead.

In the 2nd inning, Blevins drove in 3 runs on a bases loaded double plating McNew and Buffington who had each singled and Curtis who had walked.  Leah Kelly upped the lead to 9-0 on a single to left bringing home Blevins.

Chattanooga State used a triple by McNew, a double by Buffington and a single and double by Curtis and Blevins for 3 more runs to start the 3rd inning.  Whitney Galloway and Cooley followed up with a single and double to give the Tigers their 15 runs.

Two critical two out errors put the Tigers in the hole quick vs. UTK, trailing 5-0 after two innings.  Chattanooga State settled down to play some good softball, loading the bases in the 5th with no outs.  Buffington lashed a line single to left driving home Galloway who had singled to start the inning.  The promising rally came to a screeching halt when Curtis was called out when the umpire saw her batted ball hit her outside of the batters box.

In her post game talk, Keylon-Randolph challenged her team to take this weekend success and turn it into belief.  "You have shown that you can compete at any level," said Coach Randolph.  "Now continue to believe in yourself and you can accomplish anything."

The Tigers next fall ball action is a double header vs. the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday, October 24.  The start time is slated for 1:00 p.m. EST.

Success in Alabama

posted October 8, 2009

On Thursday, October 8, Tiger softball traveled to Auburn, Alabama and beat Chipola College 4-3 and lost to Auburn University 4-1.  Against Chipola, freshman Alex BufTeam at Auburn Universityfington had a hand in all four runs the Tigers scored.  In the fourth inning with the score knotted at zero, Buffington lead off with a triple to left center and scored when Tabitha McNew hit an infield single giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Chipola took the lead in the fifth pushing across two runs only to see Chattanooga State score three in their half of the fifth with two outs.  Designated player Ashley Bryson lead off with a single to center and was sacrificed to second by Leah Kelley.  After the second out of the inning, Kayla Elswick and Kaela Jackson each walked to load the bases.  Buffington stepped to the plate and drove the first pitch down the right field line plating three runs for the 4-2 lead.  Sophomore Haley Workman worked out of a seventh inning jam to take the win for the Tigers.

In the much anticipated game versus Auburn, Chattanooga State outhit the AU Tigers 8-4 but stranded eight runners on base.  Kendall Bruning showcased her pitching abilities in the game as Katie Blevins went 3-for-4 including a line drive home run over the right centerfield wall.  Bryson reached base three times including two singles into right field.  Chattanooga State left the bases loaded in the fourth and had runners on in each inning except for the seventh.

Head Coach Beth Keylon-Randolph left the field realizing her team has the chance to be something special this year.  "I am proud of the way my girls battled in both games.  We competed every inning and the hard work is starting to pay off as we continue through the fall season.  Success against either of these teams gives us a lot of confidence going into the spring."

The Tigers travel to the University of Tennessee Knoxville to play four games highlighted by a game versus the Vols on Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 pm.

Chattanooga State Beats DI and DII Competition

posted October 3, 2009

Beth Keylon-Randolph's Tigers of Chattanooga State traveled to the University of Evansville, Indiana, and swept the double header contest 7-6 and 3-0.  The Tigers used a 6-2 win versus the University of Missouri St. Louis as a tune-up game prior to the sweep of Evansville.

Sophomore Haley Workman took the win in the first Evansville game as former Soddy Daisy star Katie Blevins  went 3-for-4 while clubbing a two run homer to centerfield.  First year player Brittany Cooley added a three-run homer along with a double to right center.

The Tigers started their scoring in the second when Tabitha McNew walked with the bases loaded to cut Evansville's lead to 2-1.  In the 5th, Blevins followed a WhitneyBrittany Cooley Galloway single with her homer to center to give the Tigers a one run lead, 3-2.

Chattanooga State added one in the 6th when Kayla Elswick scored on a pass ball.  In the seventh, Cooley added her three-run shot to right center following a single by Blevins and a walk to sophomore Leah Kelley.  Evansville rallied in their half of the seventh but fell short in the Tigers 7-6 win.

In the nightcap, sophomore Kendall Bruning went the distance in the 3-0 shutout as Cooley once again was a difference maker hitting a three-run homer for the margin of victory.  The fast paced game saw Bruning give up only three hits on 91 pitches.  Cooley's heroics followed a one-out walk by Blevins and a two-out walk by Kelley.  On a 3-2 pitch, Cooley drove the ball over the left field fence handing the Purple Aces of Evansville their second defeat.

In the warm-up game versus Missouri St. Louis, the Tigers played long ball as Blevins and Bruning went deep in the first inning giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead.  Laura Curtis hit a solo shot in the third increasing the Tiger lead to 5-0.  Bruning threw three innings of no-hit ball to start the game as former GPS Adrienne Lamberson pitched the final four innings in the 6-2 win.
